The island Skåtøy

About

Welcome to Skåtøy, the largest of Kragerøs islands with a population of approximately 250 residents. Here, on this beautiful island you will find a spectacular landscape with varied terrain. Ranging from charming trails bending through the lush forest, idyllic and sheltered little coastal coves ’til mountaintops with great viewpoints. Skåtøy caters to the most of your needs and its cultural life flourishes year-round. Here you’ll find galleries with art exhibitions, concerts, a cafe, a wooden church, lots of cultural heritage and even a coastal fort from world war 2.

Transportation
The ferry and the express boat makes several daily trips back- and forth to Skåtøy. The ferry docks at Skåtøyroa, whilst the express boat and hired taxi boats can dock at either Skåtøyroa (at the end of the island) or Skåtøybrygga (in the middle of the island. Close to the church and Skåtøy café). Click here to see more information about the taxi-boats, and click here for timetables from Kragerø- Skåtøy (23.06-19.08).

Please note the following terms in regards to the express boat Perlen: Only hand baggage is allowed on board Perlen, passengers with lots of luggage/goods may be referred to our ferries. In Kragerø city center the express boat Perlen goes from the pier next to the taxiboats, behind the white houses at the ferry port.

Explore Skåtøy
Skåtøy is a magnificent island to explore, either on foot or by bicycle.  From the ferry terminal at Skåtøyroa it’s seven easy kilometers to the old fishing village Korset, at the tip of the island. The road passes close to Skåtøy Church, also known as the Cathedral of the archipelago. The church, built in 1862, is one of Norway’s largest timbered church.

Krikken Coastal Fort lies on the outermost shore of western Skåtøy and a stop here is an exciting experience steeped in history as well as a beautiful hike through Skåtøys nature. Read more about the coastal fort from WW2 here!

Over the years, a great many artists have lived on Skåtøy for longer or shorter periods of time, including the famous artist Theodor Kittelsen. At Skåtøy Café, a charming little place in the middle of the island, you can take a break and enjoy the beautiful scenery whilst treating yourself to a delicious meal or perhaps just a cold drink in the summer heat. In the middle of Skåtøy cafes’ courtyard you’ll find an iconic statue of Theodor Kittelsens character “Pesta”.

Island hopping on a bicycle
Take advantage of the ferry and combine your bicycle trip on Skåtøy with other island on an “island hopping with bicycle” tour.

Skåtøy by private boat
If you’re in possession of a boat, you can’t go wrong with a trip along Skåtøys coastal line on a hot summer day. The Eidkil Canal is a waterway that splits the island in two, and in one end of the canal there’s a troll painted on the mountain. The “Eidkilstroll” has been an ionic and well know landmark in Kragerø for over 80 years.
