Activities
In Kragerø you can enjoy an active vacation. The surrounding district and the larger islands are ideal for tours on bicycle. We have terrain that will challenge the most enthusiastic cyclist or suit a quiet family outing. Jomfruland and Skåtøy are perfect for island-hopping with bicycles. Their landscapes are flat and easy to cycle on, and you can find places to swim almost everywhere.
The waters around the coastal islands offer superb canoeing. Narrow channels invite you in where only sea birds will disturb you. If you’re looking for something more demanding, the deep blue sea is right out there off Jomfruland. Opportunities for canoeing and fishing are also excellent in the many idyllic lakes in the forests around town. The Kragerø Hiking Club has set up a number of trails in and around Kragerø. Most of them lead you to a lookout point where you can enjoy views out over the islands.
A short trip by boat will bring you out among these islands with all their many possibilities. Sunrise over the waters off Jomfruland will find you reeling in the catch of a lifetime. Or you can cruise quieter seas closer to shore with a rod and reel.
Our programme of activities is large and varied. Riders will find many opportunities for horseback riding – both on the mainland and on the islands. Our new ferry offers cruises in coastal waters where you can enjoy the view from the top deck.
Golfers will also find several different and excellent courses. Or the toughest among you can test their nerves while sea-rafting (RIB).
Gumøy Culture Trail
To know Gumøy better, you can go on a trip to the island and follow the Culture Trail. The trail is a cooperative project between Søve Videregående skole, Ulefoss, Gumøy Vel, owners of the land, the local authority and the county governor.
On the island you find such as old ponds for ice production, dolomite mines, fields with bush and trees for human use and with plants for animal grazing, old traffic roads, stone fences, golf course and rest areas. Please close gates and do not disturb plants and animals.
The trail is under development and improvement as a part of the education for nature use at Søve Videregående skole. The students can get knowledge of how to make plan for traffic in the nature, conflict, directing traffic and to place work for well being in the nature.
The agriculture department at the county has awarded money for such as information boards, posters, gates, jobs and yearly inspection.
The trip takes about 1 hour and the landscape varies. Wheelchair users and baby buggies should follow the car roads.
