Activities
In Kragerø you can enjoy an active vacation. The surrounding district and the larger islands are ideal for tours on bicycle. We have terrain that will challenge the most enthusiastic cyclist or suit a quiet family outing. Jomfruland and Skåtøy are perfect for island-hopping with bicycles. Their landscapes are flat and easy to cycle on, and you can find places to swim almost everywhere.
The waters around the coastal islands offer superb canoeing. Narrow channels invite you in where only sea birds will disturb you. If you’re looking for something more demanding, the deep blue sea is right out there off Jomfruland. Opportunities for canoeing and fishing are also excellent in the many idyllic lakes in the forests around town. The Kragerø Hiking Club has set up a number of trails in and around Kragerø. Most of them lead you to a lookout point where you can enjoy views out over the islands.
A short trip by boat will bring you out among these islands with all their many possibilities. Sunrise over the waters off Jomfruland will find you reeling in the catch of a lifetime. Or you can cruise quieter seas closer to shore with a rod and reel.
Our programme of activities is large and varied. Riders will find many opportunities for horseback riding – both on the mainland and on the islands. Our new ferry offers cruises in coastal waters where you can enjoy the view from the top deck.
Golfers will also find several different and excellent courses. Or the toughest among you can test their nerves while sea-rafting (RIB).
Jomfruland Bird Station
Jomfruland Bird Station is located at Øitangen by the north tip of Jomfruland. Here, counting and observation of bird life are taking place all year round. The station is also a gathering spot for people who are interested in birds and nature. The bird observation tower at outer side of Øitangen is a main base for most of the activities, such as counting of migratory birds, bird ringing etc. For interested groups it offers guiding that presents various activities of the station. An example is a demonstration of bird ringing together with information for purposes of doing it. Guiding can be booked over the phone, +47 40 00 07 73.
Jomfruland Bird Station works as an ideal base of Telemark division of Norwegian Ornithological Association.
