Attractions

The atmosphere of Kragerø is an attraction in itself. You can view exhibitions of art at one of our many galleries and then pick up a charming antique at a shop right next door. Or go for the latest fashions at a specialist clothing store.

Theodor Kittelsen, Norway’s beloved illustrator of fairy tales, was born here in Kragerø. His childhood home, Kittelsen House, is now a museum located in the centre of town. Annual exhibitions are held there in honour of the artist.

The Compagniet group of applied artists have their workshops near the harbour on Ytre Strandgate. You can visit them there and watch as they produce hand-blown glass, ceramics and textiles.

The history of the coastal fort on Gunnarsholmen goes back to when enemy warships and pirates threatened the town. The island is now a park with excellent bathing facilities. The fort’s cannons are fired whenever a major event is celebrated, like our national holiday on 17 May. Then the three- and four-hundred-year-old cannons mark the occasion with a bang!

Bråten Graveyard is one of the two graveyards in Kalstad. The graveyard was constructed in 1847.

At the entrance, there is an old wrought iron gate. It is seldom to see such iron gates remaining from the period of time. By the side of the gate, there are stone steps leading over a stone fence. They say that, even if this is officially confirmed, poor people and those who gave birth to a child outside marriage used these stone steps. Theodor Kittelsen painted the gate and the steps with watercolour in 1909. The painting belongs to Kragerø Local Authorities. We find such stone steps also around the old Christi church in the town (tore down about 1869-1870), and outside of Langøy Graveyard, which is still standing there today.

In northwest end of the churchyard, a large iron plate is lying over the grave where customs cashier Christopher Castberg " Knight of the Order of the Sword" rests in peace. The grave is also called Knight's Grave. It is said to be haunted and the lid has often been found little bit open. Bråten Graveyard was inaugurated on 24th of July 1847, the same day as Castberg was buried.

Family Homan's graves lie in north-left part of graveyard. Family Homan was in the 1800s one of the most popular and wealthy families in Kragerø. Their medical work in national project, properties and fortune earned respect from people far beyond the border of the small coastal town. The family's house is today used as a museum at Berg-Kragerø Museum.

Family Biørn, an old Kragerø family, has also their private place at Bråten. This family place is still used today. Family Biørn has earlier owned now existing Town Hall, and the family ran considerably large shipping business.
