Attractions
The atmosphere of Kragerø is an attraction in itself. You can view exhibitions of art at one of our many galleries and then pick up a charming antique at a shop right next door. Or go for the latest fashions at a specialist clothing store.
Theodor Kittelsen, Norway’s beloved illustrator of fairy tales, was born here in Kragerø. His childhood home, Kittelsen House, is now a museum located in the centre of town. Annual exhibitions are held there in honour of the artist.
The Compagniet group of applied artists have their workshops near the harbour on Ytre Strandgate. You can visit them there and watch as they produce hand-blown glass, ceramics and textiles.
The history of the coastal fort on Gunnarsholmen goes back to when enemy warships and pirates threatened the town. The island is now a park with excellent bathing facilities. The fort’s cannons are fired whenever a major event is celebrated, like our national holiday on 17 May. Then the three- and four-hundred-year-old cannons mark the occasion with a bang!
Kragerø Kirke
Kragerø Church is a New Gothic church painted by Georg Andreas Bull and is built of brick. The church replaced the old Christi church from 1652, which was a wooden cross-shaped church. The church has a dominating place in the townscape, and it was restored and returned to the original shape in 1996.
A part of old interior and the three bronze chandeliers were transferred from Christi church. The chandeliers were a gift from an immigrant from Holland, and were made in Amsterdam around 1660. The large bronze candlesticks on the altar were also from the old church and were given by Kragerø's founder Niels Søffrensen Adeler around 1860.
On the altar lies a bible, published in Copenhagen in 1633 under King Christian IV of Denmark. The bible is a gift from Marcus Bærnholt in 1777. He has written many notes and pasted in en del in the bible.
The baptismal font with its rich décor of acanthus vines was creation in 1733 of a well-known sculptor, Torsten Hoff. The baptism bowl of silver is from the same period and is hand-decorated with such as a portrayal of baptism of Jesus.
The painting on the altar board portrays Jesus on the cross and was painted by Christen Brunn. It is a copy of the Italian Renaissance artist Guido Reni.
The organ is from 1886 and made by Hollenbach. The organ was restored in 1995 and gives now a magnificent sound in the new church.
