Attractions
The atmosphere of Kragerø is an attraction in itself. You can view exhibitions of art at one of our many galleries and then pick up a charming antique at a shop right next door. Or go for the latest fashions at a specialist clothing store.
Theodor Kittelsen, Norway’s beloved illustrator of fairy tales, was born here in Kragerø. His childhood home, Kittelsen House, is now a museum located in the centre of town. Annual exhibitions are held there in honour of the artist.
The Compagniet group of applied artists have their workshops near the harbour on Ytre Strandgate. You can visit them there and watch as they produce hand-blown glass, ceramics and textiles.
The history of the coastal fort on Gunnarsholmen goes back to when enemy warships and pirates threatened the town. The island is now a park with excellent bathing facilities. The fort’s cannons are fired whenever a major event is celebrated, like our national holiday on 17 May. Then the three- and four-hundred-year-old cannons mark the occasion with a bang!
Skåtøy Church
Skåtøy Church was built by local carpenters in 1862. Architects were Schirmer and von Hanno. It is located in beautiful surroundings in the middle of the narrowest part of Skåtøy.
Skåtøy Church, which is also known as the Cathedral of the island, is Norway’s third largest timbered church. It has about 600 seats. The painting of Julie Gjessing on the altar portrays praying Jesus. The organ in the church is an old Hollenbach organ. Large chandeliers, the sideboard of Jens Lauersøns Legat, decorate the church. Beautiful glass paintings of Rolf Klemensrud decorate walls of both on the ground floor and on the galleries.
The church has its own "winter church" back of the organ gallery on the second floor.
The church witnessed the time when about 500 islands of Kragerø were densely populated and sources of income were agriculture, fisheries, mining, export of ice and shipping. The church was also in a long period (1877 - 1960) main church for the residents in Skåtøy municipality around town of Kragerø.
Church services, concerts and exhibitions are arranged in Skåtøy Church especially in summer time. These arrangements are very popular among the residents and tourists.
