Kil and Sannidal

Kil

Kil and Sannidal are the oldest inhabited districts in Kragerø municipality. This is also where the town’s only shopping centre, Volum, is located. Grave doubts were voiced about the centre when it was built in the 1980s. Now, Volum at Tangen is a vital part of life in Sannidal and functions as a meeting place for local people.

Peaceful Kil innermost in the Kil Fjord once boasted both a customs station and lively international trading connections. Now it is more idyllic with its many lovingly renovated houses. Dypsund, an island visited by tourists and local residents all year long, lies just offshore.

Sannidal

Kragerø Industrial Park is located at Fikkjebakke. This is also where cars can be parked before starting on a hike through the forests to the Hiking Association’s cottage at Jambakmyra. Further in lies Varde Mountain, the highest spot in Kragerø with an altitude of 320 metres.

Sannidal has many fine farms and an exciting history. It was a farming district in former days whose inhabitants were also involved in shipping and trade. Every year, local people celebrate Norway’s National Holiday, 17 May, at Sannidal Church, a beautiful wooden church built in 1771. The open-air folk museum with its ancient buildings dating to the 17- and 1800s lies nearby.

Sannidal is a paradise for hunters, sports fishermen and hikers. It also offers excellent swimming in the many fresh-water lakes. Tveitereid and Tyvann lakes along the main road into Kragerø are both good places for a swim. Støa Camping is located on Tyvann Lake and has its own sandy beach and dock. Breivann is also a good choice for fresh-water enthusiasts.
